Hilton Garden Inn Medford, OR is Great, But the Restaurant Needs Help

 seating; outdoors; Hilton hotel

My dear polite travelers,

Finally, the last hotel before we return home to Davis, CA.  It’s been a long journey (link), even though it was only eight days.  Eight days of driving is a tad too much for us oldsters.  Still, spending the night in another Hilton Garden Inn is worth the milage, especially since management has promised the restaurant will be open.

Note

A list of hotels and a map of our journey.

Room #420

The room was typical of Hilton Garden Inn, with the clean, contemporary upgrades: walk-in shower, extra storage, extra counter space, microwave, and refrigerator.  The desk area was exceptional with a comfy chair and plenty of outlets.

The view wasn’t the best—freeway. Still, we didn’t hear anything during the night.

The Hotel

This hotel is remarkably similar to the Hilton Garden Inn in Olympia, Washington (link) we stayed in recently.  The décor was contemporary and clean with intuitive seating throughout the shared spaces.  Also included in the shared spaces is a larger-than-usual fitness center and an accessible indoor pool and spa.

The entire hotel is accessible and pet friendly. It’s also a magnet for large group workshops/conferences, which was the case during our stay.  This meant that it took much longer for our room to be ready and affected our dinner in the onsite restaurant.

We were pleased the restaurant was open and served dinner, unlike the Olympia, Washington Hilton.  Still waiting for service, for our purchased bottle of wine to be placed on ice, to order our food and receive it, and waiting for our bill, was taxing.

The result was that our wine was warm, and my pasta dish was the worst meal I’ve had in quite some time. I ordered mushroom ravioli in a light pesto.  It arrived swimming in a pool of creamy pesto—so much so that I scraped off each piece of rubbery, over-cooked ravioli before I could stomach it.

In contrast, my hubby loved his fried chicken sandwich and raved about it and the uniquely shaped fries still.  Plus, he didn’t mind the wait.  Could it just be me?  Interesting.

Note

The Hilton Garden Inn’s onsite restaurant appears to have a common management problem.  Since each is contracted by a third party, it isn’t as consistent as the hotel itself.  For example, there was not enough staff for a large group and regular hotel guests during the typical dinner time.

The Free Breakfast

Since we wanted to get on the road early for our trip home, we skipped breakfast.  However, I did find most enjoying a freshly cooked buffet breakfast like those in other hotels.

Will I Return?

There really isn’t anything special about this hotel.  So, unless we are traveling through this area, we’ll skip it.

Until next time, my polite travelers: Happy Travels!

Pluses & Minuses of The Hyatt House Vacaville

Beautiful But Needs Adjustments to its Accessible Rooms My Dear Polite Travelers I recently read about a new Hyatt House and since I needed a short brain-tidy-vaca near my home base in Davis, CA, I ventured twenty miles west to the sprawling city of Vacaville, the shopping mecca of our general area.  The Lobby/Bar/Restaurant Walking into the lobby, I noted calming tones, striking art, décor, and welcoming faces.  The registration staff was delightful and efficient.  The attractive bar and eating area are tastefully decorated and have ample seating areas. In fact, the entire area was so lovely that I brought many of those decorating ideas home with me.  The restaurant’s menu was limited and similar to what is typically found at bars: hamburgers, pizzas… etc.  I ordered a hamburger which was delivered overcooked.  Grr… Accessible Room 133 First off, this is a gorgeous room filled with outstanding artwork.  It includes a kitchenette, small ...

Arizona: The Grand Canyon

Four Hours Visiting The Grand Canyon Updated 4/2021 I have an idea why the Grand Canyon is called “Grand”.    I theorize it’s because “Awesome Canyon” sounds more like stoner talk.  Joking aside, it is quite awesome and grand.   Recently, I was lucky enough to have a few hours to gaze wide-eyed at our big hole in the ground.  Since we (hubby & I) had only four precious hours, please follow along with what I found most important to see.  Note : Follow CDC and all park guidelines when visiting.  Wear a mask and social distance.     First Stop The first place to stop for those with limited time would be the visitor’s center.  Don’t worry about missing it.  There are plenty of signs pointing the way.  There, we found information offering park rangers, giant exhibits (displaying the entire canyon, trip planners, canyon-related history, and science), and a movie theater...

I expected more from the Hyatt Regency Sonoma Wine Country Hotel

My Dear Polite Travelers, Our first stay in a Hyatt was less than stellar.  In fact, it’s more of a mixed bag of frustration and comfort.  The hotel was beautiful, don’t get me wrong.  It was just … incomplete.  Really? Room #281 is considered accessible ? We booked an accessible room due to my hubby’s back issue—a typical old-person problem.  Typically, an accessible room would naturally have a shower with ease of entry.  In room #281?  Nope.  Getting into a tub requires some dexterity that a mobility-challenged person may not have.  This is a major problem that should be addressed.  I hope Hyatt is listening.  Other than that oversight, there were no towel bars in the bathroom — strange.  Plus, it would have been logical if there was at least one hook for clothing/robe in the bathroom as well.  And, speaking of robes, robes are an accessory in these rooms.  There were none.  In fact, I had to call down f...
