Perfect Place for the Mobility Challenged
Revised 4/2021
For
our well-deserved, but short vacation, we traveled a relatively short distance
from our hometown hamlet of Davis, CA to the lovely town of Paso Robles. We stayed in Hampton Inn and Suites Paso
Robles and I heartily recommend a stay.
Besides the free manager’s, welcome wine tastings paired with cheese,
deli meats, fruit, and crackers—very generous.
The free breakfast, free Wi-Fi, and regularly upgraded rooms urge for a
timely return.
Note:
Follow CDC and County guidelines when visiting.
Always wear your face mask when in public.
Mobility Rooms
We
spoke to a woman with muscular dystrophy who stayed in one of the first-floor
wheelchair-accessible rooms with many amenities, such as a doorbell with an
audio/strobe alert. She found everything
well-arranged and comfortable for both her and her service dog. With the free Wi-Fi, she worked well into the
night.
It's Five O’clock Somewhere
When in Paso Robles, it is best not to stay in your room though. This is wine country! In fact, it is the home of some great wines. We visited a few wineries on our stay—where not only did we taste (and purchase) fine wines—we met some great people. Everyone seems so friendly here and eager to assist in many ways. They offer suggestions for dining, touring, more tastings, etc. They really seem to want to help the guest and all businesses in the area--very refreshing.
Every
winery we visited was wheelchair accessible and some even had lowered or
special counters for those in wheelchairs.
Beautiful and well-groomed grounds for strolling/rolling, friendly and
personable tasting room managers await your arrival. Note:
grounds include some hard surfaces, some decomposed granite (most walkways),
and grass. The grass is the focal point
with numerous picnic benches. So, if one
wants to picnic, one might require a bit of assistance crossing the grass. Wineries
are not the only places to taste great wine in Paso. In fact, there are many (roughly 35) tasting
rooms right in town, which is a very nice place to wander. We took advantage of the wide sidewalks and
easy-to-navigate downtown where amazing food, wines, and unique shops can be
found. More on the wine shops
shortly. Right now, it's cheese time. Best Deli Around One
of my favorite shops is Di Raimondo"s
Italian Market and Cheese Shop, 822 13th Street. As a lover of cheese and salami, I found this
shop especially awe-worthy. There were huge
blocks of cheese waiting to be sliced for tasting and the smells...yum. Our cheesemonger was very attentive to us,
asking what type of cheese (texture, smelly, spreadable) piqued our
interest. She moved on from there
placing several of the big blocks in front of us and shaving thin slices into
our hand to ensure we received exactly what our cheese-loving hearts
desired. I was in cheese heaven. Note:
Please be polite and understanding if there are not the selections you desire or
staff to serve you. As many businesses
have suffered during the pandemic—many closed—Di Raimondo’s is experiencing short-term
trouble finding supplies and staff. Let’s
all take a collective big breath and thank them for simply being there. If we’re healthy enough to be out purchasing
deli items, we should be thankful for our health. In Paso, they are so polite! An
observation that kept cropping up was the politeness of the Paso Robles natives. All seemed genuinely kind and courteous. People driving by would slow down to inquire
if we needed anything. In every
establishment, such as Di Raimondo's Italian Market and Cheese Shop, everyone
supported each other. For example, we
mentioned wine tasting. The clerk smiled
and stated that she loves a particular tasting room and gave us a certificate
for a free tasting. We bought two
bottles—it was that good. So, this wine
country is worth the drive and most definitely worth a stay. It is truly the "Friendly Wine
Country". Notes
