What’s so Special About Buellton, CA?

Revised 4/2021

Buellton is one of those—blink and you’ve missed it—quiet California hamlets nestled in between more well-known touristy locations like Solvang and Santa Barbara.  In fact, if one didn’t know any better, one would think it is a suburb of Solvang, as it is a mere six miles away.  Most pass it by on their way to nearby wineries, which was our focus when we decided to overnight in this quaint little Santa Ynez Valley town.

Note: Follow CDC guidelines when visiting.  Always wear your face mask when in public.

Wine anyone?

Best known for the famous Pea Soup Andersen’s Restaurant  and the Hitching Post –made famous by appearing in the movie “Sideways” -- Buellton is a perfect place to begin a Santa Ynez Valley wine tasting tour.  If that is your pleasure, take a short drive to the artsy, historic Los Olivos—home to art, wine and all things beautiful.  After exploring this lovely town and if time allows, jump on the Foxen Canyon Wine Trail, which begins in Los Olivos.  Explore what seems to be a gazillion award-winning wineries and bountiful vineyards.  The Brander Vineyard and Bridlewood Estate Winery are definitely worth a visit.

Fess Parker Winery

Alternately, many of these wineries can be visited by traveling north on 101 directly out of Buellton.  Fess Parker (famous “Sideways” scene) and Zaca Mesa Winery are two of my favorites.

This trip was different.

Unfortunately, for our most recent trip, we didn’t have time to explore much of Buellton, Los Olivos or the gazillion wineries on the Foxen Canyon Wine Trail.  Ours was more of a road trip with a few longer stays in Los Angeles, Paso Robles and Carmel. However, we managed a stop at a market of interest—The El Rancho Market, technically in Solvang, but just a few miles from Buellton.

Not that I can explain it fully, but its “healthy, local-food vibe” sucked me in like a huge vacuum.  Strange.  I know.  Nevertheless, once inside I found the vibe to be spot on.  On sensory overload from the shelves of organic products and smells of recently prepared fare, we finally stumbled upon a salad bar filled with the freshest yummy treats of any I’ve sampled before.  We filled a container for mere pocket change and shared a massive lunch on their front patio.   Heaven.

After checking into the Quality Inn Santa Ynez Valley, we weary travelers decided to dine on deli in the comfort of our spacious room.  We found just the right items at the local Albertson’s.  Please read my review of this lovely, quiet motel.

For Starbucks lovers like me, you will find one conveniently located directly across from the Albertson’s shopping center: 235 East Highway 246, Suite 102, Buellton, CA 93427

Look Closer at the Hilton Garden Inn, Waikiki

Why We Might Not Return: Hilton Garden Inn, Waikiki My dear polite travelers, Imagine waiting three years to revisit a pleasant memory.  You’d probably be thrilled to be on that journey.  Right?  Well, I am, and ...well, I’m lukewarm to some aspects of it, especially our room: #1537.  But the Ocean is Right There! In our room, #1537, we have the ocean view and the fresh breezes associated with it.  Still, due to the central, otherwise excellent location, it’s noisy—very noisy.  Thus, those breezes remain outside all night.  Darn.  The pleasant sweet-ocean-air-in-our-room-memory I dream of often eluded us on this trip.  Now, it’s just sad. The Good & the Weird Beyond the noise, it is a comfortable room—especially the shower—but there’s not enough counter space.  Instead of a long counter or desk, the hotel designer thought a long built-in seat would be a clever idea??  Hint.  It’s not.  We can only ...

Hotel Review: Comfort Inn Downtown Morro Bay, CA

Old, Needs Update, but Perfectly Located Revised 4/2021 Dear Polite Traveler, I’ve always wanted to visit our central coast, an ocean town known for its big rock.  Staying in a hotel one block from the coast...dreamy.  The Comfort Inn Downtown is central to just about everything and overlooks a majestic bay with, yes, a huge rock.  This hotel is adequate, and the staff is accommodating .  Most importantly, it is inexpensive for this area, especially considering the view.  Note : Follow CDC and county guidelines when visiting.  Always wear your face mask when in public.   Also, during the pandemic, some amenities may not be available.  Please remember, this is only temporary. Sonoma, California: DoubleTree Sonoma

Updated 4/2021 Our Stay in the DoubleTree Hilton Hotel Sonoma Wine Country in California As over-worked small business owners, we decided to play hooky traveling through Sonoma County for a couple of days.  Since we recently experience excellent service on our last stay in a DoubleTree, we booked a room at their Sonoma Wine Country property in Rohnert Park. Our Journey Through Sonoma County Our drive from our home in Davis pleasant with light traffic.  We chose a slightly longer route through Sonoma so we could take in the beauty of the Glen Ellen area vineyards.  The vineyards here are quite beautiful with green rolling hills as a backdrop.  Arriving at the DoubleTree As we arrived, I mentioned to my husband that since this trip would focus on cheese tasting, it would be perfect if we were given a free upgrade to a room with a refrigerator.  The hotel appeared fully booked, so I assumed that was impossible.   As...
