How to Dine Cheaply When Staying at the Hilton Waikoloa Village Hotel

Hilton Waikoloa Village Hotel; Big Island Hawaii

The Happy Places

Meals can be quite expensive at the Big Island’s Hilton Waikoloa Village Hotel.  So, we improvised.

Finally in our happy place, especially for those who decided to listen to salespeople instead of enjoying the beginning of their vacation. (Timeshare post)   Since this was our first night, we were a bit tired and didn’t want to search for the best deal on dinner, we stopped at the only bar open onsite, sat outside, and shared a very nice Caesar salad.  It was excellent.  And the best part is the happy hour wine.  Amazingly, they had a very nice California Chardonnay for $5.00 a glass.

Beware, the bars and restaurants are expensive.  To save more than a few dollars, follow our lead and take advantage of happy hour.  Each bar has its own version of happy hour.  And even if they say that they only have a certain type of drink for happy hour and you want something else, ask if it can be included in happy hour pricing.  Worked for me.

Speaking of bars and getting happy…we decided to attend the Hilton’s luau.  Please read about this must-avoid activity.  Enjoy your beverage and watch the sunset.

Walk a Short Distance to Save on Meals

Other than that ample meal we were lucky enough to find some great deals at the ABC Gourmet Shop and Starbucks at the Queen’s Shops and the King’s Shops nearby.

One night was a very good hot chicken pressed sandwich from our favorite ABC store.  Dinner another night was a sandwich we built with freshly sliced deli meat, few slices of cheese, and a small baguette from ABC from which my hubby had lunch the next day with the leftovers.

We had a similar deli night with deli meats, Macadamia nuts, cheese, and bread from ABC.  But there are many reasonably priced fare options, besides the ABC at the King's Market, which is directly across the street from Queen’s.  Check around.  Every place we visited had excellent food.

Pluses & Minuses of The Hyatt House Vacaville

Beautiful But Needs Adjustments to its Accessible Rooms My Dear Polite Travelers I recently read about a new Hyatt House and since I needed a short brain-tidy-vaca near my home base in Davis, CA, I ventured twenty miles west to the sprawling city of Vacaville, the shopping mecca of our general area.  The Lobby/Bar/Restaurant Walking into the lobby, I noted calming tones, striking art, décor, and welcoming faces.  The registration staff was delightful and efficient.  The attractive bar and eating area are tastefully decorated and have ample seating areas. In fact, the entire area was so lovely that I brought many of those decorating ideas home with me.  The restaurant’s menu was limited and similar to what is typically found at bars: hamburgers, pizzas… etc.  I ordered a hamburger which was delivered overcooked.  Grr… Accessible Room 133 First off, this is a gorgeous room filled with outstanding artwork.  It includes a kitchenette, small ...

Arizona: The Grand Canyon

Four Hours Visiting The Grand Canyon Updated 4/2021 I have an idea why the Grand Canyon is called “Grand”.    I theorize it’s because “Awesome Canyon” sounds more like stoner talk.  Joking aside, it is quite awesome and grand.   Recently, I was lucky enough to have a few hours to gaze wide-eyed at our big hole in the ground.  Since we (hubby & I) had only four precious hours, please follow along with what I found most important to see.  Note : Follow CDC and all park guidelines when visiting.  Wear a mask and social distance.     First Stop The first place to stop for those with limited time would be the visitor’s center.  Don’t worry about missing it.  There are plenty of signs pointing the way.  There, we found information offering park rangers, giant exhibits (displaying the entire canyon, trip planners, canyon-related history, and science), and a movie theater...

Cruise Room Review: Grand Princess L307

Comfy, Rocking Room on the Grand Princess Revised 4/2021 Dear Polite Traveler, What does a person really want in a cruise ship stateroom?  Well, I suppose the answer would be different with each passenger.  For my hubby and I, we wanted to be able to see the ocean and be comfortable.  Since this was a relatively chilly weather cruise, we skipped a balcony room and chose an outside cabin with a window.  Not many were available when we decided on an Alaskan cruise anyway.  Even so, I think ours was perfect.  Not too small and not too expensive.  After all, this is our second Alaskan cruise, so I did not feel it granted an extravagant suite.  We are not that type anyway. Note : Follow CDC and Princess guidelines when visiting.  Always wear your face mask when in public.  Where’s our room? We knew our room was on the Lido deck.  Check.  Nevertheless, we couldn’t find cabin 307.  Ever...
