Our
manners are the most important accessory to pack when vacationing in a foreign
country. The people of each country view
protocol, etiquette, and manners
differently. Just consider our presidents’
trips to Europe and all the different protocols each was required to learn and
then exhibit. This is something all of
us should consider as we venture out beyond our borders.
Dress and Behave for the Region
For
example, if vacationing in Italy, plan to dress and behave more formally than
here in the US. Italians firmly believe
in a term called, “bella figura,” which literally means beautiful figure. Culturally, Italians believe in behaving with
a sense of decorum and formality and this term reflects this belief. This is a natural extension from loyalty to
family,
friends, and the community, especially in the south. One should always try to present oneself in
the best manner; one’s actions should at least appear virtuous.
Homework Doesn’t End Once You Leave School
Do
your homework before crossing our borders.
Read tour books and websites from those countries of interest. Ask others who have traveled to these
destinations. What were their
experiences? Gather as much information
as you can before you leave to minimize your culture shock and possible
insults.
Mind Your Gestures and Phases
Something
as simple as a wag of a finger could be insulting. In Egypt, it is extremely insulting to wag
your finger at someone, while the OK gesture we use means something entirely
different in several other countries. In
addition, while in Great Britain do not even try to use the ‘V-sign with the
palm pointed inwards, as it is considered vulgar and offensive.
Learn
a few polite words and phrases to use and do not just assume others will know
English. Even if others speak English,
avoid slang and euphemisms. Phases like,
“It’s better to have two birds in the hand…” will most likely confuse someone
who does not speak English well. Most
likely that person will be looking around for the birds. Moreover, slow down. Speak slower because of our regional accents;
it may be difficult for others to understand us.
Shed The Ugly American Facade
Try
to fit in; avoid appearing as “ugly American”.
Americans tend to appear as if we
think we own the place as if we are an arrogant society. Therefore, the more we try to understand the
culture and try to emulate it before we arrive, hopefully, the less we will
offend.
To
that end, it is important to note that Americans tend to develop relationships
quickly, while many others need more time.
Therefore, avoid asking personal questions like what a person does for a
living. Avoid physical contact, wait for permission to
address others by their first name, and stand when being introduced to
others.
Americans
are also known for being too loud,
so remember to use your “indoor voice”.
Also, as stated above for traveling to Italy, dress more formally than
you would normally. We tend to be known
for our bulky sneakers and blue jeans. Walking down the streets of Paris dressed as
such is one of the fastest ways to mark yourself as the clueless American.
